….bury us close but leave room at the top for you and me pushing up daisies
Published April 4th, 2008 in general blather and LOTD. 0 Comments"(You & Me) Pushin’ Up Daisies" is one of my favorite songs by Chandler Travis off his album ‘Ivan in Paris‘. Absolutely love Chandler - I have had the wonderful fortune to be able to see him in Boston over the past few months and if you get a chance you should see him too. Simply perfect and today’s LOTD choice.
love discovering new music from friends, family…and Fred Wilson
in the spirit of giving, here’s a new mix - more to come - random tracks - but all good in their own way
Fun lyrics to come via LOTD too…….
I got a message from someone in Austria who wanted me to upload an mp3 version of my Gnarls Barkley Crazy cover from YouTube…..so I’ve added it below. Listen, download and enjoy. I’m also including the chords to the song because I’ve had a few requests for it from some YouTubers.
My version is really easy to play - 4 chords really
1st Chord )Em….I then place my thumb on on the 6th string and walk up to the third fret of the 6th string and then switch to ….
2)G major - play this for a bit then switch to the
3)C chord - I play it modified with your pinky playing the 3rd fret of the 6th String (essentially add a G to the C chord). Finally
4)B chord (I play this as a modified power chord - I take the shape of the E chord, barre it and bring it up to the 7th fret. I actually do not bar the whole 7th fret - I just put my thumb on the 7th fret of the 6th string, my ring finger on the 9th fret 5th string, my pinky on the 9th fret, 4th string and my index finger on the 3rd string. The first two strings are left open.
If you want, you can just play a B chord here - doesn’t need to be too complex.
So simply stated, Em, G, C, B - this is the whole song. It just loops over and over. I hope this helps
More music posts to come - next up, my new mixtape……..
A while ago I decided to rerecord and remix some of my original songs with some additional instruments, backing vocals and the like. Well - rerecording was the easy part. Mixing down was a bit harder and the Pro Tools software didn’t make it very easy for me. The funny thing about the Pro Tools software is that while it is the ‘industry standard’ and a simple program to record with, it will NOT work without being connected to Pro Tools hardware. As a legal owner of Pro Tools software and hardware,I expect to be able to use my software/hardware in the best way that promotes my creativity and music.
Personally, I’m more prone to get struck by inspiration at 2 in the morning while falling asleep than when I actually have time to sit in front of my music gear. The only way that this works though is if I make it as easy as possible for me to capitalize on this inspiration. It is a lot easier to whip out my laptop and try a new idea with one of my songs while sitting in bed than it is to trudge to another room and fire up the studio. Yes - it can be done, but in the spirit of Getting Things Done and not just Thinking About Getting Things Done I realized that I needed a solution that would work with my creative process - not hinder it.
After a bit of Googling revealed that there wasn’t much of a sustainable solution using Pro Tools, I decided to try and mixdown in another program - specifically Cubase.
From what I have heard, there are a lot of people love Cubase but look at it mainly as a good sequencing program. Well - I’m sure it is a wonderful sequencing program - but it allowed me to mix down with ease. The only copy protection for Cubase is a USB dongle that you can plug into a freely available USB port. That is a lot more convenient than lugging around my MBox 2 Pro to bed at night.
So here is a copy of the newly remixed song ‘Prophet’, off of ‘The Big Injun That Could’. I might continue to tweak it here and there, but I like the promise of what it offers.
Side note: I am going to try and continue recording in Pro Tools and mixing down in Cubase. Until there is a convenient Pro Tools mobile solution, this arrangement will need to suffice for now.
Hope you enjoy the track.

Most people out there have heard of Leonard Cohen without knowing who he is or what he’s done. I remember the first time I heard El Cohen - I was probably 14 or 15 and visiting some relatives in Atlanta. My Uncle Bobby was playing some tracks of Leonard Cohen and I kinda fell into it pretty hard. I remember finding some of his work in the Norton Anthology of Poetry in high school and being awed by the depth and breadth of it. I remember my dad buying all his albums and I remember making recordings on cassette tape and wondering if I could ever sing or write with as much soul.
I know I have a long way to go
You can read ABOUT Leonard Cohen on Wikipedia - but to really understand and GET him - you need to listen to him.
For everyone that has seen the movie Shrek and heard the song Hallelujah (either the Buckley or Rufus Wainwright cover), you’ve heard a Leonard Cohen tune. Or maybe you’ve seen the old Goldie Hawn/Mel Gibson movie (fantastically awful flick) - ‘ Bird on a Wire’ - and heard the title song - then you’ve heard a Leonard Cohen tune. He’s been covered by so many people across so many different genres.Do yourself a favor and go see the Leonard Cohen documentary - I’m Your Man’.
Below is my humble version of a Leonard Cohen tune. Its called ‘ Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye’. In the original, Leonard finger picks and sings in a very melancholic sort of way. I’ve changed a few things but I hope that you get some emotion out of my version.
Leonard Cohen is best served after a few drinks when you’re in a melancholic mood and in the dark. He is good for the soul..
C’mon and everybody put your hands together

Have you seen these two men before? If so - you should know that one is armed with a killer guitar and the other is dangerous behind the mic. The Scratchtrack bus has just pulled into the station - after a long trip down the East Coast. Word is that they’ve got some tennesseplayalisticdodgevanhiptopfunkymuzik on the set list.
You’ll find them at Ragtime in Arlington - tonight at 9:30pm. $5 cover. Come through and have a drink with me. Oh - and buy their new album. It is phenomenal.
Living on the Road my Friend….
Published February 20th, 2007 in general blather, videos and session americana. 1 Commentis gonna keep you free and clean Now you wear your skin like iron Your breath as hard as kerosene…..
I just got off the phone with my old roommate from college who recently arrived from an extended tour on the road. He is living the dream and playing music full time. His new solo album comes out later this year - but in the meantime he is playing bass with several different groups. Last week he was actually in DC performing at the the Millennium Stage (more on that later) with the Revolutionary Snake Ensemble. Great stuff actually - and while he’s waaaaaaaaaaaaay to modest to talk about it - I guarantee that he will make it BIG!
Anyways - he plays in band in Boston called Session Americana and I had the pleasure of seeing them last time I visited New England in March of 2006. Below is a great video of them playing Pancho & Lefty from a recent show in Vermont.
If you are lucky enough to get up to Boston in March, make your way to the Lizard Lounge in Cambridge, MA on March 8th or 9th. There you will find them playing their CD Release Shows for “Beer Town, The Table Top Collective Vol. 3″
Ch-ch-ch-changes - Time may change me…
Published January 28th, 2007 in general blather and Gigs. 0 CommentsWe’re almost done with the 1st month of 2007 - 11 more to go and who knows what they will all bring. This music blog hasn’t been working as much as I’ve liked it for a number of reasons….but I’m trying to put less obstacles in my path that prevent me from making this space meaningful to me and to what I want to achieve with it.
That being said - I’m playing less shows right now but writing and recording a lot more. I’m using technology to help me create new music. I have been experimenting with Reason, using Pro Tools and my newly acquired Mbox 2 Pro for new recordings and playing guitar through my PODxt.
Its been interesting and very productive. I have faced many challenges using this new technology, but while the learning curve has been steep, it has allowed me more flexibility and enabled more creativity overall.
I will post up these half baked musical ideas as they develop and describe the learning curve, including the resources I have found. Lots of changes this year already for me - I just need to find a better way to enunciate them. Stay with me - the Big Injun is moving again…….
Playing at Clyde’s of Georgetown tonight because….it’s been a long time…..
Published November 16th, 2006 in general blather and Gigs. 0 CommentsI shouldn’t have left you…..left you…..without a dope beat to step to…..
Sorry that I’ve been MIA - so much to catch up on and talk about (Scratchtrack show and my review of their new album , new original music I’ve written, crazy experience playing the Georgetown homecoming show….etc etc etc..
so
that will need to wait for a few days longer - but i WILL post good and proper over the next few days and add some good musical treats for the masses.
In the meanwhile, if you are wondering what to do on a cold and rainy Thursday night, I suggest you come to Clyde’s of Georgetown to hear some good music provided by yours truly. I’m starting tonight at around 9:30 I believe - so come out when you can if you’re around.
(me+you+Clydes) X (pints of beer+good music) = good times
